Your first language + framework. What they are, which to pick for your goal, and exactly where to start for free. Anza hapa, bila kuchanganyikiwa.
Language vs framework. A language is the words and grammar you use to instruct the computer (Python, JavaScript, Dart, PHP). A framework is a ready-made structure built with that language (Django, React, Flutter, Laravel). Language = bricks. Framework = a house frame already standing.
Building a shop website? With the language alone you write login, page links, database code, security and forms yourself. A framework gives you all of that ready, so you build the shop itself. But a framework is still the language: weak Python = lost in Django.
Pick by goal: websites → JavaScript + React. Backend & APIs → Python + Django or FastAPI. Mobile apps → Dart + Flutter. Data & AI → Python + pandas and scikit-learn. Business systems → PHP + Laravel. Golden rule: one goal, one language, one framework, three months.
Still not sure? Start with Python. It reads almost like English, works for web, data, AI and automation, and has thousands of free courses. Prefer websites? Pick JavaScript.
The web route, step by step: HTML (structure) → CSS (style) → JavaScript (the language) → React (the framework) → Git + deploy.
Other routes that work: Dart → Flutter for mobile, Python → Django for backend, PHP → Laravel for business systems. Language first, then its framework.
Ready for a framework? You can use variables, write if/else and loops yourself, write functions, use lists and dictionaries, read an error, and build a small app without a tutorial.
Your first 12 weeks: set up (1–2), the basics (3–5), a first project with no tutorial (6), the framework (7–10), ship it to GitHub and online (11–12).
Where to learn for free: CS50P and the python.org tutorial, freeCodeCamp, The Odin Project, MDN, react.dev, Flutter codelabs, the Django Girls tutorial, Laravel Bootcamp.
Beginner mistakes: switching languages every week, React before JavaScript, tutorial hell, arguing about the best language, pasting AI code you can't explain.
Your turn: which language + framework are you picking? Niambie kwenye comments.
